The South Dunedin Retail Centre Revitalisation Plan was approved for release as a web-based plan by the DCC Planning and Environment Committee last week. The Plan is available at www.dunedin.govt.nz/southdunedin.
Anna Johnson, DCC City Development Manager, says “This format ensures the Revitalisation Plan is a living document, where people can see the status of approved projects and new ideas and projects can be added as they come up, both community and DCC-led.”
The Revitalisation Plan sets out an integrated package of actions that will revitalise the retail centre both socially and economically, including DCC, partnership and community projects. These actions are in various stages of completion, from the recently completed Lorne St pocket park and ongoing vacant shop exhibitions, to a mural for the rail bridge, which is still being negotiated.
Jane Orbell, President of South Dunedin Business Association says “This is a very important step in an ongoing process. The vibrancy and vitality of the South Dunedin business district, both retail and industrial, is a key component in reducing negative outcomes for the people in South Dunedin and this urban regeneration focus on South Dunedin is timely and an appropriate use of limited resources.”
One of the major capital projects in the Revitalisation Plan is pedestrian safety and amenity improvements to King Edward Street, at the Hillside Road, Lorne Street intersection and McBride Street intersections and a small footpath build-out adjacent to Carey Avenue. This work is scheduled for construction starting in late May 2012.
