BLENHEIM

Plans are afoot for the Mens' Shed in Blenheim. Space has been found for hte shed just over the railway line in Dillons Point Road, next to the community Bright Centre.

The Men’s Shed concept has grown in communities across New Zealand and Australia. There’s already a Shed in Picton and efforts are underway to establish one in Havelock.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says the idea is to have somewhere for older men in particular to get to together.

“It’s somewhere that they can come, mix easily, meet others, build things, perhaps work together on something, maybe learn from each other, allow an older generation to mix with a younger one, even provide a bit of guidance or mentoring for a youngster,” said Mr Sowman.
REAP is underwriting the project but there’s a lot of work yet to get the shed built and fully equipped. Community Education Organiser Ailsa Carey says the concept of the Sheds is to provide a “blokey” and good-humoured atmosphere where men feel productive, connected and useful.

It’s hoped the Blenheim Shed will be open by March 2012.
