MILFORD

A pod of dusky dolphins have been entertaining guests on Southern Discoveries’ Encounter Nature Milford Sound cruises.

Renowned for their dynamic acrobatics, the dolphins have been “putting on a show” for boats cruising the sound for the past four days.

Encounter Guide David Newman captured the antics of the 60 strong pod of dolphins, along with dozens of enthralled visitors from all around the globe.

“They’ve been in the sound since Monday and our guests have been very lucky to see them leaping out of the water and playing around the boat a number of times,” said David.

“Our Encounter cruises are perfect for close-up shots of seals, birds and other wildlife, including dolphins and the rarest penguin in the world, the Fiordland crested penguin,” he said.

“Seeing the dolphins this week has been the ‘icing on the cake’ and the perfect Christmas present for our guests.”

It is rare to see the Dusky Dolphins as they are only visitors to Milford Sound. They visit us annually at about this time of year, and will usually stay for a week or two’.

The dusky dolphin is one of the smallest dolphins in existence, reaching between 1.5 and 2m long and weighing a maximum of 150 kg.
