Fifteen young people from five local schools have been selected to serve on the 2012 Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC).

Rotorua District Council youth projects officer Jill Campbell says there is a big year ahead for the youth council, including leadership training, learning about local government, and event organisation.

“We’re all looking forward to the challenges and team work. There are lots of community events and projects for our youth councillors to be involved in and to be challenged by, and I’m sure each member will gain a lot of satisfaction from being a part of it all.”

“The biannual Youth in Local Government Conference takes place in April. We won the Supreme Youth in Government Award at the event in 2010 so we’ll be going back to defend the title. We’ll also be working on Ten Year Plan submissions and a submission on the government’s Green Paper for Vulnerable Children, as well as Youth Week and Music Month in May.

The RDYC will begin its year with a comprehensive training weekend from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 February.

The 2011 Rotorua District Youth Council is:

Shantahlia Korau, Missy Gibson, Jenny Kim, Robert Hammond, Ashley Hilson (all Western Heights High School); Max Baird, Finton Walsh, Jordan Bates, Matthew Wells (John Paul College); Shaun Geerlings-Parker, Terewai Henare Kopua (Rotorua Boys' High School); Riley Gilbert-Burne, Jana Moerenga, Brooke Thompson (Rotorua Girls' High School); and Kerry Power (Reporoa College).
