Boaties heading to the Portage can pull up to a new jetty now the Council has replaced the old wooden jetty that used to serve this busy stop-off point in the Kenepuru Sound.

The old jetty, believed to have been there for a century, had fallen into disrepair. The jetty was officially closed three years ago because of its deteriorating state. Most people had been driving their boats up onto the beach or driving over the road to Portage.

Kenepuru and Central Sounds Residents' Association chairman Pat Williams says the jetty is a vital connection point for tourists and locals alike. But as the last owner of the jetty did not have the need or interest to maintain it, the Council stepped up to take ownership and arrange the upgrade.

Finished in time for this summer, there's now a jetty and floating pontoon where up to four larger boats can unload at a time.
