Julie Bubb, Chairperson of the Paeroa Ward Committee, announced today that Paeroa had been one of the three (3) finalists selected for the Mitre 10 Community of the Year category in the New Zealander of the Year Awards.

There are five categories of awards being Community of the Year, New Zealander of the Year, Senior New Zealander of the Year, Young New Zealander of the Year and Local Heroes.

“I am very excited that the community spirit and the success of the Paeroa Community have been recognised in this way” said Councillor Bubb, “and it is very pleasing to realise that this recognition has been given against such strong competition from seventy (70) entries nationwide”.

Councillor Bubb stated that “the application had focused on the community spirit and the involvement in the town of many organisations and agencies, the staging of events and the very successful safer community programmes that were currently underway in the town”.

The application highlighted the numerous events held in Paeroa during and the number of community groups and volunteers that were involved in planning, promoting and holding these events. Councillor Bubb stated that reaching the final three (3) was a testament to work, effort and the can do attitude of the many people involved.

“Making the final three in the Community of the Year Award category will be a real boost for Paeroa” said the Mayor of Hauraki, Mr J T Tregidga and it is great to see the hard work that was put into this project by Julie Bubb has received this recognition.

“I speak for the whole District in wishing Paeroa every success in this award” said Mr Tregidga

The other finalists in the Mitre 10 Community of the Year category are from the Asian Event Trust in Wellington and the Christchurch Charity Hospital.
