Residents of Napier will be seeing progress as the construction of the new wing of the Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery moves above ground.

Much work is going on behind walls with the refurbishment of the original 1930’s building, and a new link between the Century Theatre and the original museum.

“Mr John Wright, Design Manager at the Napier City Council, reports to me, and is managing the project directly for the Council” the Chief Executive, Mr Taylor, said yesterday. “I am pleased to note that the work is on time and on budget. Only 1/3 of the project is funded from rates, with the balance coming from generous sponsors in our community and the government.” Further, Mr Taylor says he is “pleased with the contractual relationship between the Council and Gemco, and the fact that they are focused on a quality finish and meeting both budget and deadlines as planned.”

The Council has agreed to add to the reconstruction in accordance with the initial recommendations from the Royal Commission on the Canterbury earthquake. “This has added some cost, but remains within the allocated budget” said Mr Taylor.
