Public meeting to seek new ideas on celebrating 2012 Children's Day

Rotorua District Council (RDC) is asking local people and organisations to share ideas and contributions for this year’s Children’s Day, at a meeting next month.

National Children’s Day is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of March, and once again the council will be hosting its popular Children’s Day at The Redwoods, this year on Sunday 4 March.

RDC community arts officer and Children’s Day co-organiser, Kiri Jarden, says over the past three years the council has worked with community and business organisations to provide a wide range of arts, sports and games for free to children and young people at the event.

“Last year around 2000 people attended our Children’s Day and enjoyed the opportunity to try new, fun things for the whole family.

“The Great Go-Kart Race in particular enabled parents and grandparents to spend focused time with their children while creating really awesome carts, and the race will be part of the day’s programme again this year.”

Ms Jarden says organisers are working to provide more activities in 2012, and are keen to hear from people in the community who have ideas or can contribute to the success of the day.

A meeting is being held at the Redwoods Visitor Centre on Wednesday February 8 at 5pm for anyone interested in offering new ideas, games, activities, food or prizes for this year’s event.

Children’s Day 2012 is taking place at The Redwoods on Sunday 4 March 4 from 10am to 3pm, with a potential postponement to Sunday 11 March in case of bad weather.
