The previous record for the total number of bikes presented at an iWay Big Bike Fixup was smashed during the event held on Sunday (February 5th) at the Hastings clock tower.

Mechanics from Avanti and Revolution Bikes looked over the bikes to ensure they were road worthy and any minor repairs which were required were completed on the spot.

The fixup saw 236 bikes presented, which easily beat the previous record of 168. The original 90 minute event was extended by an hour to cope with the large number of bikes.

Anyone whose bike couldn’t be fixed within a short time frame was given a $10 voucher which will help pay for more thorough repairs at a local bike shop.

The Big Bike Fixup was part of Hastings District Council’s support of BikeWise Month. Events being held during February include the BikeWise Challenge for businesses and the Go by Bike breakfast which encourages people to ride to work or school on Friday, February 24th.

Anyone who decides to cycle on that day, is invited to stop off at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House between 7am and 8.30am to enjoy a great breakfast and be in with a chance to win a spot prize.

BikeWise month also includes the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s new mass trail ride on Saturday February 25th, which will finish at the Puketapu Domain.
