A change to the way recycling is collected in the Upper Clutha (Makarora, Wanaka, Lake Hawea, Luggate and Cardrona) will be signalled with the delivery of a second crate this month, Queenstown Lakes District solid waste manager Stefan Borowy said.

“From 5 March recycling will be collected in two containers, one for glass and one for the remainder of the recycling. Collection days will also be changed for both recycling and rubbish,” he said.

Council recognised storage and convenience issues with the move to two crates but sorting the glass from the remainder of recycling would improve the quality and value of the products and offer those households struggling with overflowing crates, more capacity.

“For an effort made in each household the collective impact is significant,” Mr Borowy said.
The second crate for glass would be delivered to Upper Clutha households from Monday 20 February. It would be placed just inside each property’s boundary.

A brochure delivered with the new crate would outline the change in days, by area, with any residents still not clear, able to find a map online on the Council website www.qldc.govt.nz or at a library or Council office.

“Residents can also ring Council’s customer service team to check on days or talk through any other questions,” he said.

Any resident without a second crate by the end of February should call the Council.

“There will no doubt be a few teething issues and we ask for patience with that regard, however Wanaka and the surrounding communities are outstanding recyclers and our hope is the transition will be relatively seamless,” Mr Borowy said.

What to put in your crates:

Crate 1 – glass bottles and jars only

Crate 2 - Paper and cardboard, plastic containers 1- 7 (look for the on the bottom of the containers) - lids off, washed and squashed. Metal cans and aluminium foil– washed and squashed.

Crates and rubbish should be placed at the kerbside by 8am on the day of collection.
