This Saturday, the Haier Pulse get the chance to be one of the very first teams to set foot onto the courts at Ngā Purapura, a brand new complex at Te Wānanga o Raukawa in Otaki.

The team will face an invitational men’s netball side made up of players from the Manawatu and Wellington regions. They will play the inaugural game on one of the two international standard courts, as part of the opening ceremony of Ngā Purapura.

Ngā Purapura has been 12 years in the making and is a stunning facility, housing classrooms, offices, a fully-equipped gymnasium, a nutrition laboratory and cafe, conference facilities, changing rooms and sports hall. The state of the art building will be the base for teaching and research for Te Whare Oranga, the health faculty.

Te Wānanga o Raukawa is a tertiary college and with over 2,000 students it is at the heart of the Otaki community. The college focuses on physical wellbeing and as a result it offers several degree programmes in health, including a masters degree. Ngā Purapura will go a long way to help facilitate these programmes and ensure that regular physical activity and healthy living are an integral part of a contemporary Māori lifestyle.

Te Wānanga o Raukawa CEO, Mereana Selby, is thrilled to have her local ANZ franchise team play at Ngā Purapura for the opening. “It is an opportunity for our community to enjoy a sporting spectacle that we have never been able to host in the past. We are very grateful to Robyn and the Haier Pulse for their support”

Haier Pulse Coach, Robyn Broughton, is honoured that the team has been asked to be part of the opening ceremony “Otaki is a strong netball community and with three of the team’s players: Daya Pritchard, Katarina Cooper and Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit all from that area, it is a real privilege for the team to take part in such an important day.”

With little more than a month until the start of the 2012 ANZ Championships, this is a great opportunity to see the Haier Pulse in action, as they prepare for the trans-Tasman competition. Entrance to the game is free and is on a first come first served basis. The game starts at 10am.

The first Haier Pulse 2012 ANZ Championship game is against the Mystics, in Auckland, on 1 April.
