Rotorua District Council’s annual Children’s Day will be celebrated at The Redwoods on Sunday [4 March], offering a wide range of free fun activities for children and young people to enjoy.

Face painting, story-telling, crafts coordinated by the Travelling Tuataras, trampolines, play and balance equipment from Mid Island Gymnastics (MIGS), sack races and other games are sure to entertain the littlies. For the older children, paintball target shooting with Paintball Action, and a climbing tower and horizontal bungee will be part of the fun on offer.

As in past years local fire, ambulance, police and defence services will be along to demonstrate their skills and to allow kids and adults to check out the specialist equipment and vehicles they work with. This year defence force personnel will also give an exciting live demonstration.

There will be official Children’s Day giveaways, and Pak N Save has generously supplied free apples for everyone. Bring a picnic and stay for the day. Coffee and other great food will be available to purchase, including a sausage sizzle run by MIGS.

The event raises money for the Children’s Unit at the Rotorua Hospital, including entry fees from the popular Great Go-Cart Race. This crazy event pits drivers of awesome home-made carts against each other in fast and furious action along Long Mile Road.

Zorb, Lone Star, Hell’s Pizza, Rainbow Springs, Caterpillar Experience, Polynesian Spa, The Redwoods, Aquatic Centre and Bunning’s have all contributed to the array of main prizes, while Mountain Bike Rotorua has donated a fantastic spot prize of a GT kid’s bike just for entering!

Timetable for Children’s Day - Sunday 4 March:

  • 10am Starts
  • 11.30am Defence Force display
  • 1.30pm The Great Go-Cart Race
  • 3.00pm Finishes

Classic Hits’ Chloe and AJ will be MCs on the day.

If the weather it too wet and windy the event will be postponed to next Sunday [11 March] but ‘fingers crossed’ for a sunny day in The Redwoods. Listen to Classic Hits for any postponement announcements.

Local businesses and clubs supporting Children’s Day include Rotorua Mountain Bike Club, Rotorua Parents Centre, Plunket, Safe Kids, Treasure Rotorua, and Waiariki Early Childhood Teaching.
