The Invercargill City Council is lifting hosing restrictions in Invercargill and Bluff but Water Manager Alister Murray is still urging people to be mindful of water use and avoid wastage.

Mr Murray said while he was lifting hosing restrictions for residents, the city’s reservoirs were still recovering and he was asking people to be careful with water use to allow them to refill.

“Ironically the rain last week, which brought relief to the rivers, also caused some problems with water treatment because flood conditions put more pressure on the treatment process and the usual response is to lower throughput.

“Rain up-country yesterday might lead to the same thing happening again, which reinforces the need for people to use water wisely.”

Mr Murray thanked residents for their cooperation in reducing water used and said it had certainly kept water demand back to manageable levels.  “On behalf of Council, I would like to thank residents for their response,” he said.
