The Waimakariri Zone Committee is holding a workshop that is open to the public on Monday, 5 March at the Waimakariri District Council in Rangiora.

The committee will begin the workshop by discussing industrial discharges in to the Waimakariri River.

The committee will then receive and discuss a presentation on the Ashley River Rating District from an Environment Canterbury Regional Engineer.

The committee will also be updated on the progress of the Regional Committee‘s development of its draft Regional Implementation Programme (RIP) which is expected to be released for public feedback this month.

The Regional Committee considers regional

The Regional Committee considers issues of environmental restoration and repair; land use impacts on water quality; as well as water storage, distribution and efficiency options.

The Waimakariri Zone Committee’s Implementation Programme (ZIP) was endorsed by councils late last year. It recommends the actions, responsibilities and time-frames for activities to help achieve the principles, targets and goals set out in the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

Once accepted by councils, ZIPs form the basis for the design and realignment of council work and planning programmes for freshwater. The Waimakariri ZIP was developed following numerous committee meetings and extensive stakeholder and community engagement.

The zone committee operates as a joint committee of Environment Canterbury and the Waimakariri District Council. The Waimakariri Zone includes the Ashley River catchment and shares the Waimakariri catchment below the gorge with the Selwyn- Waihora and Christchurch-West Melton zones. It includes Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Oxford.
