A batch of bank deposits has been reported missing between the Waihemo Service Centre and Council’s bank, Bank of New Zealand (BNZ), Oamaru on 28 February. The deposits, which relate to receipts between Friday 24 and Monday 27 February, contained a small amount of cash. They did however include a number of cheques for rates installments.

Council is contacting those directly affected and is working with banks and New Zealand Police to investigate this matter. At no time will staff be asking residents for any information of a personal nature.

Affected residents will be asked to cancel their cheques made during this period. Council will refund any stop payment fees incurred. The BNZ has also offered to waive stop payment fees for their customers.

Anyone with concerns should contact Jan Stringer, Council Customer Services Unit Manager on Phone (03) 433 0300 and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Oamaru Police.

BNZ customers who believe they are affected may wish to ring the bank directly at (03) 434 0700.
