MARLBOROUGH

Native riverside and aquatic plants are an essential part of the natural ecosystems of Marlborough’s waterways. But there are some varieties of plant that are unwelcome.

At certain times, excessive growth – or unwelcome plant species - can degrade both water quality and the fish habitats.

The District Council aims to maintain the balance in our streams and waterways, removing any excessive weed growth that inhibits flow at the time of year when it’s least likely to disturb the lifecycles of streamlife.

And as part of the Council’s Wai Korero (Water Talk) Project in schools, students are being taught about the need to keep pest fish and waterweeds out of our local waterways.

The Pest Fish & Pests Waterweeds Programme introduces students to the problems caused by invasive waterweeds and pest fish and their effect on our native fish and plants and teaches them how to identify the pests.

This term classes from Mayfield, Fairhall, Riverlands Schools are taking part in the programme.
