Local Writer Updates New Zealand Heritage Cookery Treasures

Do you love the Dunedin Farmers’ Market? Found new previously unknown treasures in your veggie patch? Then you’ll enjoy the company of local food and travel writer, Barbara Keen, who will be at Port Chalmers Library on Thursday 3 May from 6.30pm to talk about her latest cookery book, Grace and Flavour – a book that seeks to make sense of our forbear’s recipes bringing fantastic home-grown cookery back to the modern kitchen.

Any culture famed for its food relies on fresh, seasonal produce but with the exception, perhaps, of the family roast few traditional recipes have survived the passage of time – or the effects on our taste buds of that other great Kiwi tradition, OE. So, as we try to save on food bills, avoid the effects of intensive farming, genetic modification and unwanted additives – we find ourselves picking the brains of older family members and rediscovering the bounty in our back yard.

Barbara Keen has been slaving over her food and word processors, bringing the best of Kiwi culinary ingenuity back to the modern day table with recipes that have been translated to work with ceramic stove-tops and blenders. The resulting recipes are not only delicious but thrifty, and make the most of ingredients harvested from the land we live on – including the back garden.

Audience members will have an opportunity to sample a recipe from Grace and Flavour, quiz the author and buy a personally signed copy of her book – but you’ll need to book to avoid disappointment.
