Over 120 leaders from New Zealand’s waste, recycling and resource recovery industry will be in Hastings later this week for their midyear roundup.

The two day conference is being organized by the Waste Management Institute New Zealand (WasteMINZ) which is the national voice on waste and recycling.

WasteMINZ Chairman Paul Bishop says” Bringing the conference to the Hawke’s Bay Opera House is especially timely, as the Hastings District and Napier City Councils put the final touches on a new joint Waste Management and Minimisation Plan. Speakers at the conference will outline how the industry can build its capacity while sharing knowledge and best practice approaches”.

“We are delighted to be able to bring the conference to the iconic Opera House, which is an ideal setting for this conference with its wide range of facilities while our delegates will provide a boost to the Hastings accommodation and retail sectors,” Mr Bishop says.

Key note speakers will detail new ideas on how to improve waste diversion and increase efficiencies while reducing harm to the environment. Other sessions will include an update on the Emissions Trading Scheme and a new initiative which looks at how the country should deal with car and truck tyres which have reached the end of their life.

The conference will be opened by Hastings Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers and delegates will be taken on a tour of the Omaranui landfill.

The Waste MINZ midyear roundup opens at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House on Thursday May 3rd 2012.
