Free film-making workshops to help grow a generation of sustainability storytellers

Film-making workshops are being held throughout New Zealand by The Outlook for Someday sustainability film project for young people.
The free one-day workshops are open to students from years 7 to 13 as well as primary/intermediate teachers and youth workers.
They offer an opportunity for young people and adults to develop their film-making skills together and to explore sustainability as a theme.
So far 19 workshops have been scheduled, running from late May to early August, with a possibility that more will be scheduled if further funding becomes available.
Each workshop runs from 9am to 4.30pm.
Students, teachers and youth workers are invited to register for a workshop in their area at www.theoutlookforsomeday.net/workshops, where dates and venues details are available for each workshop.
Spaces are limited to 25 participants per workshop.
The workshop programme builds on the success of a pilot series of workshops in 2011, which was funded by the Ministry of Youth Development, Department of Conservation and Auckland Council.
This year the funding partners have been joined by the New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO and Creative New Zealand’s Creative Communities Scheme.
“The objective of The Outlook for Someday is to help grow a generation of sustainability story-tellers,” said David Jacobs, Director of Connected Media, the charitable trust which runs the project.
“With the workshops we can support that growing generation as well as encourage them to enter The Outlook for Someday film challenge.”
Now in its sixth year, The Outlook for Someday challenge is to make a short sustainability-related film. It can be any genre, filmed with any camera and any length up to 5 minutes. Anyone up to age 24 can enter, either individually or in a team.
Entrants are encouraged to interpret ‘sustainability’ in the way that makes sense to them.
20 Winning Films are chosen each year by judges from media, education, government and business.
They are celebrated at The Someday Awards red-carpet ceremony in Auckland, where Special Awards are announced.
Following the announcement of the Winning Films there is an online popular vote for Audience Favourite.
The entry deadline in 2012 is 21 September.
