Victoria University is saddened by the recent passing of distinguished alumnus, former Cook Islands Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Arama Henry.

Born in Aitutaki, Sir Geoffrey was schooled in Whanganui before coming to Wellington to attend Victoria University.

Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika) Hon Luamanuvao Winnie Laban says Sir Geoffrey was a senior and colourful leader in our Pacific region and a proud supporter of Victoria University.

"In November Sir Geoffrey attended the very first meeting of Victoria University's Cook Islands alumni, and delivered the keynote speech. He was very supportive of the initiative and very proud of the achievements of Victoria's Cook Islands graduates. He encouraged young and old to pursue studies at Victoria University.

"His death is a sad loss for the Cook Islands nation and, on behalf of the University, I extend my condolences to his family and the people of the Cook Islands at home and abroad at this time."
