SPCA branches throughout New Zealand are asking their communities to give generously to this week's annual Paws Appeal.

An appeal envelope has been delivered to every household and, in many towns and cities, volunteers will be out on the streets collecting much needed donations to ensure their work for animals is funded.

"We receive no government funding and rely entirely on donations from the public to do our work. We're willing to sit, run and fetch to help raise funds, but we shouldn't have to beg you to help us to help the animals. Their welfare should be important to all New Zealanders," says National Chief Executive, Robyn Kippenberger

"The SPCA is active across the length and breadth of New Zealand, investigating cases of cruelty, rescuing abused or neglected animals, re-homing as many of them as possible with loving families and helping educate the community on the humane and responsible treatment of animals.

"At every SPCA branch or shelter around the country, you will find dedicated people caring for animals and combating cruelty. Many of our staff are volunteers, who devote many hours to their work and whose only reward is the knowledge that they're helping creatures who can't help themselves," she adds.

Last week, the SPCA released its 'List of Shame', detailing fifty cases of extreme cruelty and neglect towards animals, during the first nine months of this year.

"The list was a chilling reminder of how much needs to be done to prevent abusive behaviour. By contributing to our Paws Appeal, New Zealanders can help the SPCA fight cruelty and make us a kinder, more compassionate society," Robyn Kippenberger adds.

Donations to the SPCA can be made by returning the Freepost envelope or by taking a donation to your local SPCA branch or local ASB Bank branch. Street collections will also be happening in many areas.

Other options include telephoning the special appeal number 0900 97772 to make an automatic $20 donation or visiting the RNZSPCA website www.rnzspca.org.nz to make an online donation.
