Mt Ruapehu is blanketed in white gold this morning.

Snow is currently falling to 1,200 metres with at least 4cm having fallen this morning, and more is forecast to arrive throughout the week.

Mt Ruapehu Ski Area Manager, Steve McGill says the Mt Ruapehu team is gearing up for the season which is due to open on 16 June at Turoa, and 23 June at Whakapapa.

“Winter is certainly upon us. At Turoa it is snowing to the 13km barrier and the road is now closed, and at Whakapapa it is snowing to Scoria Flat and the road is restricted,” says Mr McGill.

“We are all amped for the winter season and the snow on the mountain today is a glorious sight for skiers and boarders.  As we switch to the winter season, snow is what we want now.”

Mt Ruapehu is in full swing preparing for the winter season ahead.  The Ngā Wai Heke lift construction is on track to be completed and commissioned by the end of May 2012.

Mt Ruapehu’s Turoa Area Manager, Chris Thrupp says the new lift will transform Turoa Ski Area, opening up between 15-20 percent of new lift accessed terrain.

“It is the biggest terrain expansion at Mt Ruapehu since the far west T-bar more than 30 years ago,” says Mr Thrupp.

“Whether you’re a seasoned pro or want to experience snow for the first time, prepare for some serious fun at Mt Ruapehu this winter.”
