Ohope Road works are nearing completion with the road sealing being brought forward to complete the upgrade before the start of the summer holiday season.

The sealing works which were initially scheduled for February next year (2008) have been brought forward (weather conditions permitting) to ensure the road is completed and is in top shape prior to Christmas. The Council contractors are currently undertaking pre-seal work with sealing scheduled for the week of 26 November 2007

The Council’s Transportation Manager Corrie Claassen says some further work is planned between now and the 23rd of November for a small stretch from Brown road to Pohutukawa road as part of the Ohope Escarpment reticulation system project.

In May this year, contractors completed earthworks between Otarawairere Road and Pohutukawa Avenue and the filling operation at Otarawairere Road. In the last few months work has focused on completing the kerb, channel and pavement on the northern side of the road from the foot of the hill and to Otarawairere Road. Road marking of new traffic lanes has also been completed.

The Ohope road upgrade has involved the widening of the road carriageway, earthworks on several dangerous curves, construction of kerb, channel, drainage structures and berm on the southern side of the road and installation of a sewer pipe from Pohutukawa Avenue to Brown Road.

Some major earthworks were undertaken on the southern side of Ohope Road to the west of Pohutukawa Glade, while restoration planting was undertaken at Brown Road intersection fill, Cliff Road cut benches, Ngati Awa lookout, Cabbage Tree Corner and the fill area west of the Pohutukawa Glade.
