The placement of new bridge beams will see the closure of McChesney Bridge over night on Wednesday 30 May. The work is taking place as part of the current bridge widening project.

The bridge, which is adjacent to the site of the former Arthurs Point Tavern, will be closed from 10pm on Wednesday 30 May until 5am the next morning (Thursday 31 May). The road would be closed to all traffic with an alternative route via Littles Road available. Signage would be in place.

Queenstown Lakes District Council project manager Lane Vermaas said the decision had been made to do the work at night so as to minimise the disturbance and electronic signs advising of the upcoming closure were already in place.

Mr Vermaas said work on the bridge was ahead of schedule so far and once the beams were laid the new bridge deck would be constructed.

“The bridge will remain open during this phase of the construction period, operating as a one way bridge as per normal,” Mr Vermaas said. “As the work progresses more of the second lane will become available and special care will be taken to ensure traffic flow during peak times when Coronet Peak opens and during the school holidays.”

Mr Vermaas also thanked residents and road users for their patience.
