If the strains of Snoopy’s Christmas and synthesised carols playing in shopping malls make you clamp your hands over your ears, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra offers an alternative festive season musical treat with the Lion Foundation Celebrate Christmas concerts in December.
Held in the acoustically splendid and suitably reverential Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell, the concerts will present a collection of classical works from around the world with highlights including the atmospheric Christmas Tableau by the composer Joaquin Rodrigo, Vaughan Williams’ gorgeous Fantasia on Christmas Carols, Adam’s rousing O Holy Night, and the joyous finale of Mendelssohn’s Hark, the Herald Angels Sing!
The Orchestra will be joined by soprano Deborah Wai Kapohe, baritone Nicholas Dinopoulos and the Graduate Choir under the baton of Ken Young for this grand celebration of inspiring symphonic sound.
“Lion Foundation Celebrate Christmas is Auckland’s chance to celebrate the festive season by hearing its Orchestra do what it does best – performing beautiful classical repertoire,” says APO Chief Executive, Barbara Glaser. “This is also the only opportunity this year to hear the Orchestra perform in the glorious Holy Trinity Cathedral and we are pleased to be able to offer a matinee performance so that the joy of the season is as wide-reaching as possible.”
Tickets to Lion Foundation Celebrate Christmas ($15 to $55) are available now from the APO Ticket Office Ph 09 623 1052 or you can purchase tickets online at www.apo.co.nz .
