Over a year of rigorous assessment and continuous improvement has paid off for New Zealand Sugar Company Ltd (NZ Sugar), which has become just the fourth food manufacturer in New Zealand to achieve certification of a globally recognised food safety standard.

The internationally recognised Food Safety System Certification 22000 Standard is endorsed by major food and beverage manufacturers across the globe.

The achievement will give added confidence to customers and consumers, and open new export opportunities to this New Zealand business – known for its iconic brand Chelsea Sugar.

NZ Sugar General Manager Bernard Duignan says as one of the largest ingredient suppliers to the New Zealand food and beverage industry, it is important that NZ Sugar operates at a standard that is world class.

“It is a standard based on scientific and technical advances, and takes us well and truly beyond the realms of compliance to constantly identifying and controlling food safety hazards.

“It was undertaken in response to the growing requirements of major food and beverage manufacturers, and it enhances our credentials in the Asian export sector where we see growth opportunities.

“Credit must go to our operational team for this significant achievement, and they can now count their performance among the best in the world.

“This will give our customers and consumers of Chelsea Sugar products confidence that their supplies are sourced from facilities with food safety standards that are among the world’s best.”

The certification encompasses NZ Sugar’s Chelsea Refinery site, its packing and blending operation in Glenfield, Auckland and liquid sugar processing site in Hornby, Christchurch.
