Nearly 200 people got to grips with snow chains at a series of snow chain fitting workshops held in Queenstown and Wanaka recently.

Initiated by the Queenstown Lakes District Council and Downer (the Council’s roading contractor) in conjunction with the New Zealand Police, NZSki and Lakeland Glass, the workshops showed people how to fit their chains correctly and even gave participants the chance to bring along their own car and chains for some one-on-one tuition.

QLDC transport manager Denis Mander said the workshops had proved to be a worthwhile exercise with 110 people taking part in Queenstown and 80 in Wanaka.

“We’re pleased with the response, “Mr Mander said.

”Last year showed us that there were a number of issues around the use of chains in snowy weather and we felt it would be good to offer people the chance to learn how to fit them properly and safely.”

People who took part in the workshops were entered in a draw to win one of two sets of snow chains. The Queenstown winner was Joshua Harverson of Gore with Peter O’Brien of Wanaka winning the other set.

Mr Mander said people could find out more about winter driving including video footage of a “How to fit chains” demonstration on the Council website www.qldc.govt.nz.

“Given the number of different brands on the market, this video demonstration might not help everyone but is a good place to start,” Mr Mander said. “Everyone needs to be aware that there’s no substitute for practicing fitting the snow chains you have. If you have difficulty with them or need help, go and talk to the snow chain retailer”
