ROTORUA

The Contact Energy ‘my sport’ series kicks off in Rotorua this Sunday with the first of seven triathlon events planned this summer by Tri NZ.

Blue Lake will welcome close to 300 competitors in the two events, the Tri My Sport race for beginners and the Contact Energy Cup for the more experienced triathletes.

Rotorua has attracted a particularly strong entry list in the men’s race for the Contact Energy Cup with a number of regulars on the world stage lining up on Sunday morning in an Olympic distance event.

James Elvery (111), Martin van Barneveld (160) and Tony Dodds (240) are favoured to contest the podium positions with all ranked inside the world’s top 250, while a dark horse will be Ironman exponent Kieran Doe as he looks to tick over some training mileage in preparation for the longer races later in the season.

The women’s race looks to be an equally even affair with Fleur Bromley (Auckland), Tri NZ Youth Academy athlete Taryn Richards and Katherine Anton (Whangarei) possible contenders although surprise results and indeed late entries cannot be ruled out at this stage.

Racing will be centred on Blue Lake with the swim followed by a road bike and forest run in the first of the seven race my sport series.
