It's Christmas Day and somewhere in Sunnynook, Irene McMunn is throwing a christmas party... and you're invited! Get a group of friends together and come and enjoy a festive mid-winter xmas treat... the tea trolley is polished, christmas mince pies are on the cake stand and the sherry is ready!

Irene entertains you with her unusual and innovative cooking and festive decorating techniques, which she interweaves with funny and emotive stories of her life so far. Plenty of laughs and bitter-sweet humour promise to entertain you in this story of loss, loneliness and survival set against a remarkable backdrop of kitsch memorabilia.

"Yvette Parsons creates a kiwi Elanor Rigby in her haunting portrait of an elderly widow...' Paul Simon-Barton, NZ Herald.

As Irene prepares for this party, she regales us with stories from her past – the Tangiwai disaster[1] and the effects that had on her family, her courtship and marriage to the late Len, and her relationship with her daughter.

Silent Night is a poignant portrayal of a senior life lived solo, delicately unfolding a world where all is not as it seems. Written and acted by Yvette Parsons, the play is inspired partly by her childhood experiences in the rest home run by her parents.

Arts On Tour NZ is proud to tour Silent Night throughout the country, a play that has previously attracted critical acclaim – last year it was a hit at both the Nelson and Tauranga Arts Festival – and gasps of laughter and recognition from appreciative audiences wherever it has been performed.
