Looking at district maps just became a whole lot easier with the addition of a new mapping service to the Queenstown Lakes District Council website.

Improved mapping service available online

Local maps have always been available online but QLDC GIS manager Ryan Clements said the new service is much easier to use and offers many more options to users than the previous version.

“We’re expecting the new service to be much more widely utilised,” he said.

“It’s simpler to navigate and has some extremely useful features that will be beneficial for a wider range of people, not just the planning community.”

People can use the mapping service to search for and find property information but there are also a number of different specific map views including recreation features, services and zoning.

“The base maps can show the area in either an aerial or topographic view,” Mr Clements said. “From there you can apply filters to choose what information you wish to see.”

Recreation view shows the location of parks, reserves and local walking and mountain biking tracks. District Plan view enables users to look at what zoning applies to a particular piece of land and Services view shows the location of council-owned and private pipes and other infrastructure.

The service also allows users to download an app to their smartphone or tablet devise so they can search for information on the go.

“The uses of this service are endless from finding out where your property’s toby is to checking your boundary-line or even mapping out a day-walk or mountain-bike trek,” Mr Clements said.

“There’s no charge to use the service and we’re already receiving feedback from people saying how useable it is.”

People can access the new mapping service and instructions on how to download the apps online at www.qldc.govt.nz
