Ruakaka South Sewer Extension Scheme progressing
Teams working on the Ruakaka South Sewer Extension Scheme are investigating 168 properties due to be hooked up to the scheme in the Ruakaka Beach area.
The $9.4 million scheme will establish a sewerage system that will pump wastewater from 470 individual properties to the Ruakaka Waste Water Treatment Plant and upgrade the plant to handle the increased volume of wastewater, replace septic tank systems and reduce risk to the environment.
Teams have started assessing the electricity supply and sites for the pumping units that will go on each section.
Whangarei District Council Waste and Drainage Manager Andrew Carvell said the teams had received a positive response and support for the project from the majority of people involved so far.
Council has obtained a $6.79 million subsidy from central government.
In addition Council will subsidise each residential property connection by $4,998.45 (GST Incl), bringing the cost to each household connecting to the scheme down from an estimated $28,000 to $10,200.
