The bird on the back of our $20 note is an increasingly rare species – but the Marlborough Falcon Conservation Trust is working hard to restore numbers in this region.

Once common across the Wairau Plain, the New Zealand Falcon (Karearea) population has dwindled and the species is now under threat. The Trust relocates birds from the wild and establishes breeding pairs across our region.

The Falcon Trust has an education programme for students and has taken birds on visits to schools from Picton to Kaikoura. These school holidays, one of the Trust’s birds, either Wilson or Fern, will be paying visits to the Library in Blenheim. This will be a chance for children to see a Falcon up close.

The Falcons will be at the library on Thursday 5 July and Thursday 12 July from 10.30 am-11.30 am. A gold coin donation would be appreciated by the Falcon Trust.

Check out the rest of the library’s school holiday programme for storytime, crafts and games. Ph: 03 520 7591.
