A new insulation project will increase the comfort of tenants in a number of Hastings District Council’s Housing for the Elderly complexes.

Council has 220 Housing for the Elderly units located in nine complexes in Hastings, Havelock North and Flaxmere. The project will see ceiling insulation installed or upgraded in 88 units and underfloor insulation in 69 units.

The Government Agency, ECCA will provide a subsidy for some of this insulation work and that has resulted in a substantial saving on the cost of the project for council. The total cost of the installation is a little over $62,000 with the ECCA subsidy lowering the cost to council to around $29.500 which will come from council’s housing reserve.

Chair of the Works and Services committee, Councillor Margaret Twigg says “Improving the insulation of the units will increase the comfort and health of our tenants and help decrease the amount of heat that is lost through the ceiling and the floor. This insulation project will add significant value to what is already recognised as a key community asset.”

The insulation project has begun and will be completed by August 24th, 2012.
