Motorists are advised to take extreme care and reduce their speed when travelling on State Highway 2 between Bruce Road and the Domain Road intersection at Papamoa.

NZTA’s Bay of Plenty State Highway Manager, Brett Gliddon, says due to the current heavy rain, surface flooding has caused a number of potholes in areas that were resealed late last week.

“Contractors are working tonight to repair the road, the northbound lane is currently closed and a short detour is in place. Repairs are being carried out as quickly as possible to enable the highway to be restored to two lanes by morning. We ask motorists to reduce their speed and take extreme care when travelling in this area,” he said.

Slips are also likely to occur with this quantity of rain falling and motorists should consider avoiding travel tonight in the Bay of Plenty if at all possible. The weather front is currently moving east and could impact on the Eastern Bay of Plenty overnight, particularly the Waioeka George, Waimana Gorge and Wainui intersection. If drivers must travel we urge that they take extreme care on the highways, drive to the conditions, and allow more time for their journeys so that they can reach their destinations safely.

Mr Gliddon say's before starting their journey people should check with the NZTA's freephone 0800 4 HIGHWAYS or 0800 44 44 49, or its website www.highwayinfo.govt.nz  for up-to-the-minute info on road conditions.
