When Nelson mum-of-two and now author started penning the novel that is now flying off the digital shelves at Amazon, she had no idea her book would be rubbing shoulders with Fifty Shades of Grey.  That’s exactly what’s happening right now on Amazon.com though.

The Nelson author is Becky Siame, and she’s still pinching herself as she watches the download statistics sail further north with each minute on Amazon.com.

“I wrote the book, The Lighter Side of Large over a period of 7 months back in 2011, and never in my wildest dreams expected so many people to download it,” says Becky.  “Right now it’s currently at 23,300 downloads on Amazon and it’s still going up!”

It’s all thanks to an idea Becky had to launch her book as an e-book for instant download.  For a period of 3 days, she decided to make it available for free download on Amazon.

“The idea was to get people to read the book for themselves, get excited about it and tell everybody they know about it,” says Becky.  “And now with my book ranking #5 on Amazon, we’re within sights of Fifty Shades of Grey, which is at #1 and taking the world by storm!”

Not bad for a new writer, who decided to write a book very loosely based upon her own life experience as a bi-racial single mum, who overcame weight issues and the stress of a broken marriage.

The Lighter Side of Large is a lighthearted read which explores the ridicule, relationships and romance faced by Bella White; a half-Samoan, half-white New Zealander who hides behind 55kg of excess weight from the world, men and her potential. With the help of an eclectic mob of madcap friends, Bella tries to lose weight and find a man and a career in time for the infamous wedding between her sister and her ex-husband to prove you just can't keep a good mother down.

But proving there's more to her than fat is a heavyweight task. When she's kicked out of a clothing store because of her size, her crusade against weight discrimination kick starts a career, but creates problems for the new man in her life who's got skinny issues. And why does her narcissistic ex-husband keep making advances at her? Through disastrous dates and weight-loss surgery gone wrong, Bella gets more than she bargains for as she discovers The Lighter Side of Large.

The Lighter Side of Large is available now from amazon.com for instant download. Current ranking statistics can be seen at http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/digital-text/ref=pd_dp_ts_kstore_1#1 (ranking updated hourly).
