Ash from the volcanic eruption of Mt Tongariro is being blown across Hawke’s Bay.

Light ash has been reported falling in areas along State Highway 5 near Te Haroto and further east. Ash fall has also been reported on the Napier- Taihape Road.

People who live in the ash zone are advised to save water at an early stage as your supply could become contaminated. Downpipes which lead to water tanks, gully traps and gutters should be disconnected to prevent blockages and the ash should be allowed to empty on to the ground. Disconnecting downpipes from your drinking water tank before rainfall will also help protect your water supply.

Gutters and roofs should be kept clear of ash build up to prevent the possibility of collapse. When the ash has cleared, hose off your roof before reconnecting pipes.

You are advised to stay inside during periods of ash fall and use protective clothing if you go outside.

Anyone who suffers from a respiratory illness should stay indoors during ash fall with windows and doors closed and call emergency services in the event of any breathing difficulties.

Please listen to your radio for further information or call Hastings District Council (06) 871 5000 - for emergencies always call 111.
