Heavy weekend rain has caused a section of State Highway 10 in Northland to subside and the NZ Transport Agency is advising drivers that extreme care is needed.

The highway has subsided just north of the Matauri Bay intersection near Kaeo leaving just one lane for traffic to use.

The NZTA is installing temporary traffic signals to help drivers get round the slip safely.

"This section of highway is very narrow, and all drivers should use it with extreme care - especially at night," says the NZTA's acting State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Steve Mutton.

Bad weather earlier in the year had made this section of the highway unstable, and the NZTA was about the start repairs when the weekend storm struck.

Mr Mutton says full repairs could now take several weeks because of the extent of the underslip.
