Marlborough dairy farmers are being offered help from the Council to put environmental farm plans in place by 2015.

The Council is committed to working with the dairy farming community to reduce dairy effluent in our waterways and is offering farmers the opportunity to receive farm plans at half the usual $1500 price. A plan includes a full day with a consultant who provides a report, including maps, and makes a follow-up visit in 12 months to assess progress.

Those Rai Valley farmers who have already begun using farm plans provided through the New Zealand Landcare Trust are finding them useful tools to plan and prioritise environmental work on their land. The Council-sponsored programme is supported by the Landcare Trust, Dairy NZ and Fonterra. A working group of Brent Morrison, Sharon Parkes and Mark Zillwood will help Council run the programme.

Environmental farm plans will be made available to about 10 dairy farmers annually, on a first come, first served basis, for farmers in the Rai, Pelorus, Havelock and Linkwater areas.
