PALMERSTON NORTH

Motorists in Palmerston North may have recently noticed an increase in the number of pot holes occurring on City roads.

Rob Campbell programmes team leader said it is a common problem during the winter months due to the wet weather.

"Water tables are higher than during summer months causing the sub-base, the layer of metal under the seal, to stay saturated and move about. This also hinders repairs as the metal doesn't dry out and the new seal is easily damaged."

During winter large sealing projects are often temporarily patched and completely redone in summer when the metal can dry quickly resulting in a longer lasting result.

Each pothole cost approximately $30.00 to repair and the Council would like to encourage residents to report any new or large holes as they appear by contacting the Service Centre on 356 8199.
