Sam Horgan from the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team won category one of the R & R Tour de Taieri near Dunedin at the weekend.

Horgan’s teammate Tayla Harrison won the Under 19 tour which moves him into the lead in the BikeNZ Junior National Points Series.

Horgan and Harrison were joined by SUBWAY® Pro Cycling’s Invercargill based Dillion Bennett during the five stage tour.

Horgan won the opening prologue eight seconds ahead of Brad Evans with Bennett third. Stage two saw the team establish itself at the head of the race in tough windy conditions that splintered the field. After a late breakaway Horgan won his second stage in a row, again from Evans.

Gail force winds made racing very challenging on Saturday afternoon on a stage finish on Berwick Hill. Horgan and Harrison combined to break away from the main field with Alex McGregor who was eventually dropped as Harrison took the stage win.

Sunday racing saw the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling riders cover any attacks as they successfully worked to protect Horgan’s lead in his first race since taking a break over winter.

“The team worked brilliantly together all weekend and really dictated the racing,” Horgan said. “It was great to get back into racing after a hard couple of months training and I am very happy to see the form is where I want it to be leading toward the big goal of this season, the Tour of Southland.”

Horgan now turns his attention to Fielding Festival of Cycling this weekend, followed by Taupo Napier Classic and the Wanganui Grand Prix.
