New Zealand guest nights, after seasonal adjustment, fell 8.9 percent in July 2012 compared with June 2012, Statistics New Zealand said today. This follows rises in the previous two months.

"Domestic guest nights were down significantly, with international guest nights also down," industry and labour statistics manager Blair Cardno said. "These decreases were across all accommodation types and most regions in the country. However, they come after increases in recent months."

Monthly movements for July 2012, after removing seasonal variation, were:

  • Domestic guest nights fell 11 percent, while international guest nights fell 3.8 percent.
  • North Island guest nights fell 11 percent, while South Island guest nights fell 3.7 percent.
  • Guest nights fell for all accommodation types, but particularly for hotels and motels.

The national trend for guest nights has been generally declining since December 2009. The trend for domestic guest nights is relatively flat in 2012, while the international guest nights trend appears to be rising since a low point in March this year. Trend movements may be amended when upcoming months are added to the time series.

The Accommodation Survey records guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month.
