India Win Davis Cup Tie 5-0

The 2XU Compression New Zealand Davis Cup team has been beaten 5-0 by India in their Asia/Oceania Group I relegation playoff in tough conditions in Chandigarh, India.

The reverse singles saw the two respective No1 competitors clashed with Rubin Statham taking on top 200 ranked Yuki Bhambri. It was another match which was decided by only a few points as the world No179 from India took the contest over Statham ranked at 317 by a scoreline of 2-6 7-5 7-5(5).

The fifth match saw Artem Sitak play against the higher ranked Sanam Singh, with the home playing taking the clash 6-4 6-1.

India had sealed the result of the tie at the end of day two after winning the doubles. Earlier on day one they took out both singles matches in amongst major rain delays; Dan King-Turner was beaten in five sets by top 200 ranked Yuki Bhambri and Rubin Statham defeated by Vishnu Vardham in four sets.

In the doubles decider which was also delayed by rain King-Turner and Michael Venus were beaten by top 100 ranked ATP doubles player Divij Sharan and Vishnu Vardham also in five sets.

New Zealand will now play away to Chinese Taipei 19-21 October in a bid to remain in Asia/Oceania Group I.
