The announcement of the 2012 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) has seen Auckland Airport become the first ever New Zealand company to feature in the index.

Seen as the most reputable global index for the socially responsible investor, the DJSI World saw only three NZX50 companies invited to participate in this year’s round, with Auckland Airport the only company to make the final 2012 index.

“This is a fantastic result for the business.  We have worked very hard on producing a comprehensive sustainability policy and implementing an associated action plan over the last five years, so achieving inclusion in the index is extremely gratifying,” says Auckland Airport sustainability advisor Martin Fryer.

“We provided a very robust response to the DJSI survey and are delighted that we have been rewarded with visibility in this leading global sustainable business investment index, providing us with the ability to compare ourselves to other world-class companies in the industrial transportation sector,” continues Mr Fryer.

As well as being included in the DJSI World, Auckland Airport also featured in the DJSI Asia Pacific, which Mr Fryer says will provide the company with a great opportunity to raise its profile in one of its key markets.

“The DJSI process enables us to benchmark against our peers in the same sector, as well as in the Asia Pacific region and around the world.  We will be closely analysing our results over the coming weeks and working towards both maintaining and enhancing our position in this index in the future,” says Mr Fryer.

“The process to achieve inclusion on the DJSI index has certainly confirmed that paying close attention to our environmental, social and governance performance is fantastic for business.”

“Last year we also received a win in the Strategy and Governance category at the S60 Sustainable Business Awards, so these two achievements coupled together provide verification that Auckland Airport is truly a leader in the sustainability field.”
