New Zealand owned restaurant group, Mexicali Fresh, has appointed Keith Goodall and Grant Stapleton to its Board of Directors.
The appointments come off the back of ihug co-founder and entrepreneur, Tim Wood’s recent investment into the business.
The Buell/Kerlin family retain the majority shareholding of Mexicali Fresh, however Wood’s investment has allowed for expansion of the fast casual restaurant concept and the appointment of two new board members.
Keith Goodall brings to the table his financial expertise as a chartered accountant along with a wealth of business experience having sat as a director on companies across energy, telecommunications, health, education and distribution sectors. Keith is also a former chairman of ihug.
Grant Stapleton brings a lifetime of business knowledge across the New Zealand, Australian, Asian, American and European markets. He has previously led four franchised companies and has received many accolades for his work including a long list of business awards. Grant is currently involved with the directorship of five successful businesses and runs his own consulting firm specialising in strategy, sales and marketing.
Mexicali Fresh owner, Conor Kerlin, says Keith and Grant are welcome additions to the board.
“We are very pleased to have professionals of Keith’s and Grant’s calibre join the team,” says Conor. “The Mexicali Fresh concept is really taking off in New Zealand and as we move into our next phase of growth it is great to have Keith’s financial expertise and Grant’s strategy and marketing expertise along with the extensive business experience between them to help move Mexicali Fresh forward.”
Mexicali Fresh currently has four restaurants in Auckland located at Princes Wharf, Newmarket, Botany Town Centre and the newest which opened earlier this month in the Ironbank building on Karangahape Road.

The Mexicali Fresh Story
Mexicali Fresh CEO Cindy Buell and her husband John have been running the hottest Mexican restaurants in the States since 1979. In 2005 they moved to New Zealand with their two sons Conor and Tyler Kerlin, who are the driving force behind the California-style Mexicali Fresh brand in New Zealand.
The family opened the first Mexicali Fresh store at Princes Wharf in Auckland a month after arriving and have been chipping away at popularising Mexican food in New Zealand ever since. The second Mexicali Fresh store launched on Nuffield Street in Newmarket in 2006, the third at Botany Town Centre in 2010 and fourth on K’Rd in September 2012 with plans for further expansion in the near future.
The philosophy behind Mexicali Fresh is to deliver the freshest, best and most exciting food to meet the demands of today’s fast-paced lifestyle, while staying true to the food. Which is why theirs is the best Mexican you’ll find anywhere.
The wisdom and experience of 35 years in the restaurant business means the team behind Mexicali Fresh know the importance of consistency, quality, cleanliness and service. Salads and salsas are chopped and meats grilled and roasted and margaritas are mixed daily to give the freshest, most flavoursome meal you can get. While the great tunes, surf videos and selection of Mexican tequila and beer provides that Californian holiday feeling without leaving town.
