Hastings District Council will this week give Notice for a Designation of the proposed Northern Arterial Road designed to carry traffic from the Expressway to Crosses Road in Havelock North.

The designation will be formally advertised on Wednesday 21 November and will outline the statutory issues associated with notification. Two thousand eight hundred parties affected by the proposal have also been sent a letter detailing the designation notice.

Lawrence Yule, Mayor of Hastings District, said the new road would bring immense value to the district in terms of easing traffic across the Hastings urban area.

“This is a link road in as much as it connects the Expressway to Havelock North – a route that is now a rat-run of smaller roads predominantly designed for solely residential use. The Northern Arterial Road will allow those roads to go back to being residential roads, therefore making them easier to live on,” said Mr Yule.

Residential streets such as William, Frederick, Grove and Ada Streets will all benefit from the new road.

The Northern Arterial Road also has a function of distributing traffic into Hastings’ CBD and to the three industrial areas of Tomoana, Omahu Road and Irongate.

“A major win for the district is this road’s ability to smooth out the moving of imports, exports, products and services in and out of town. It’ll be great for business in those terms,” Mr Yule said.

The new road will be built to modern design standards for higher speeds and environmentally prepared by the use of swales to filter road runoff.

The expected cost of the Northern Arterial Road is $18.5M, with 61% of this coming from government subsidy.

Napier will also benefit from traffic moving east to west and reducing some of the heavy vehicles on Marine Parade.
