Low-income ratepayers have been coming in steadily to the Council to apply for the rates rebate.

Last year 1751 people were granted the rebate of up to $590. That was almost 5% more than the previous year. So far this year, Council has received 1491 applications and anyone else who may be eligible for the rebate is encouraged to make contact.

The rates rebate is granted to low-income ratepayers. It applies to many senior citizens and most other beneficiaries as well as those employed on a minimum wage with a single income coming into the home.
Mayor Alistair Sowman says it’s important that people are not reluctant to claim something to which they’re entitled.

“People apply for an income tax refund if it is due to them and this is really no different – it’s government policy to offer the rebate on local authority rates to people who qualify. Council simply handles the paperwork.”

Ratepayers may still come to the Council’s front counter or phone if they have enquiries about the rebate.
