Yesterday, Minister for the Environment Hon Amy Adams announced the TV TakeBack programme, a recycling initiative for end-of-life TVs coinciding with New Zealand's switch to digital transmission (Minister's press release).

The programme starts from today in the West Coast and Hawke's Bay and will offer subsidised TV recycling to the public. There will also be a promotional period from 13-28 October in these regions when recycling televisions will be free to the public.

The Ministry has been working with recyclers, Councils and retailers to provide convenient drop off locations, and, as these open up, they will be listed on the TV TakeBack website (note more locations will be operational and listed on the site soon). One of the aims of the programme is also to invest in infrastructure, which will build the recycling sector's capacity and capability to deal with old televisions and electronic waste.
