The New Zealand Chefs Association (NZCA) is excited to team up with breast cancer charities to get behind Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October with the ‘Chefs Love Breasts’ campaign.

As members of the World Association of Chefs Societies, every year the Association celebrates International Day of the Chef on 20 October.

This year the organisation has chosen to use the day to support breast cancer awareness in New Zealand and each of the eight NZCA branches has ‘pink themed’ activities lined up to raise funds for their chosen charities.

NZ Chefs Association National President, Anita Sarginson, says; “We are very pleased to be working with so many wonderful and deserving charities for 2012 International Day of the Chef. With thousands of Kiwi women being affected by breast cancer every year it is a cause that is close to our hearts and we hope that by doing our little bit we will help make a difference.”

Here is what’s happening around the country:

  • The NZCA Northland branch will run a fishing competition in the Bay of Islands on October
  • 28 where keen anglers must hook a pink species of fish. Each angler costs $20 with all funds raised going toward the Daffodil House in Whangarei. For more information get in touch with NZCA Northland at northland@nzchefs.org.nz.
  • NZCA Auckland will be down at Britomart on October 19 selling yummy pink cupcakes created by members of the NZCA at the AUT kitchen in support of the Breast Cancer Network Inc.
  • NZCA Waikato/ Bay of Plenty is hosting “Cuisine for a Cure” – an exclusive ladies only dinner on October 19 at Kingsgate Hotel. Just 50 tickets will be available for purchase at $200 each at www.wbct.org.nz from September 10 and all proceeds will go to Waikato Breast Cancer Research Trust.
  • NZCA Canterbury is supporting Look Good Feel Better by selling pink cupcakes. They will be selling these treats at City Mall in Christchurch on 20 October.
  • NZCA Central will get behind the Cancer Society of New Zealand Hawkes Bay branch by selling ‘pink cake pops’ produced by local tertiary students and NZCA members. Their creations will be sold around the Hawkes Bay throughout the month of October by the Cancer Society who will also focus on raising awareness of Look Good Feel Better.
  • NZCA Palmerston North will be holding a Gourmet BBQ on Saturday 13th in central
  • Palmerston North.
  • NZCA Taranaki/Wanganui will sell cream‐filled pink lamingtons with the proceeds going to
  • the House for Karen project. Lamingtons can be ordered for $18 for a box of 9 until September 12 by contacting taranaki@nzchefs.org.nz. Delivery or pick up will be on September 24.
  • In the Capital, NZCA Wellington will sell baked items and bouquet garni at Moore Wilsons and Kirkcaldie & Stains in support of Sweet Louise on 20 October.
  • NZCA Otago/ Southland will gather at the Southern Farmers Market (which is held at Southland Boys High School 181 Herbert Street Invercargill from 9.30am ‐ 12.30pm) to sell delicious pink truffles for Breast Cancer Support Inc every Sunday during October.

As a part of this campaign, the NZ Chefs Association will supply collection boxes and signage to local restaurants and businesses that are keen to get involved and display the boxes. The NZCA is calling on its members to get in touch by phoning Carmel Clark on 0800 NZ CHEFS or emailing info@nzchefs.org.nz if they would like to display a collection box at their workplace between October 1 and October 20.

“We would love to see as many businesses as possible get involved in this way. It doesn’t require any money, just contact the NZCA to get a collection box and you can start supporting to make a difference.

All NZCA members working in or running restaurants across the country will display collection boxes at counters of their restaurants from 1‐20 October.

“We encourage everyone to get behind Chefs Love Breasts and support our chefs as they work to support these worthy charities on International Day of the Chef,” adds Sarginson.
