Continuing some form of exercise, no matter how gentle, is recommended for most people as a way of helping to maintain good health. Some studies suggest that traditional Chinese exercises like Tai Chi can help older people avoid injuries from falls as well as boosting psychological well-being. The slow movements improve balance while the deep breathing techniques aid relaxation.

The range of very gentle exercise classes available include:

  • Tai Chi classes with Nancy Sherwood: a relaxed course designed for older and elderly people. Classes are Monday and Thursday, 11.00 am-noon, Redwoodtown Hall, $4 a class, and at Renwick in the Giesen Sports Centre, Thursdays, 6.00 pm-7.00 pm, $5 a class.
  • Tai Chi classes taught by Liz Scott in Blenheim, one hour classes on Mondays and Fridays, 10.00 am, 11.30 am and 1.00 pm. Ph: Liz 027 748 6666.
  • Respiratory Exercise and Support Group: this is a tailored exercise programme for those with emphysema and asthma. Meet 1.30 pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at the Wesley Centre, Henry St, no charge, Ph: Diana 03 578 6062 or Asthma Marlborough Ph: 03 579 1609.
  • Sit and Be Fit Exercises at Crossroads, 2 Redwood Street, with Yvonne, 10.00 am each Monday. No charge.
