MARLBOROUGH

Members of the Marlborough Youth Council spent last Sunday labouring - planting 50 assorted native shrubs and trees on the banks of the Opawa River, on Opaua Reserve off Marshall Place at the end of Dillons Point Road.

Mayor Alistair Sowman stopped by to inspect the teamwork where Council Reserves and Amenities officer Robin Dunn and Councillor Jessica Bagge were helping the young people to dig and plant.

Last year, the Youth Council members held a planting day at Sutherland Stream in the Wither Hills Farm Park. It’s hoped the work day will become an annual event.

The Marlborough Youth Council is an important link between Marlborough District Council and the young people of Marlborough. The Youth Council is made up of representatives from the local secondary schools, Community College and Business Management School, meeting monthly to discuss issues affecting youth in our community. Their meetings are attended by the Mayor and some councillors.

More Community planting ..

Last week, Koromiko School pupils worked with the Council to plant 1000 locally-sourced native plants at the Koromiko Forest Reserve.

Next week, Spring Creek School classes and interested helpers will help plant another 3000 locally sourced native plants at Kahikatea Reserve, SH1 beside Spring Creek, on Wednesday 17 October from 9.30 am.

Everyone welcome - the site will be sign posted.
